United Way Worldwide: From an 1887 Denver Coalition to the 211 Helpline

Dial 2-1-1 from almost anywhere in the United States and a trained person picks up, free of charge, ready to help you find food, rent assistance, or a warm bed for the night. Most callers never learn that the network behind that three-digit number is United Way.

An unlikely founding in 1887

In Denver in 1887, a woman, a priest, two ministers, and a rabbi came together to create the Charity Organization Society. Their idea was simple but new: instead of dozens of charities each knocking on the same doors, they would run one combined fundraising campaign and share the proceeds among local agencies.

That first campaign raised $21,700 — more than $700,000 in today's dollars — and supported over 20 local health and welfare groups. The model spread under a few different names along the way: Community Chest, then United Fund, and by 1970, United Way.

A federation, not a single charity

Today United Way is less one organization than a network. United Way Worldwide acts as the coordinating body for around 1,800 local United Ways — each one autonomous, raising and spending money in its own community — reaching tens of thousands of communities across five world regions: the United States and Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and the Middle East, Africa, and Asia and the Pacific.

Their work clusters around a handful of areas: youth opportunity (early childhood education, literacy, college and career readiness), financial security (job training, free tax help, housing), health (food security, mental health, access to care), and disaster relief and long-term recovery.

The quiet workhorse: 211

The most tangible piece of all this is 211. It's a free, confidential helpline that runs 24 hours a day, reaches roughly 99% of the United States and all of Canada, and answers in more than 180 languages. You can dial 2-1-1 or text your ZIP code to 898-211.

A helpline volunteer with a headset, with lines reaching out to a house, a basket of groceries, and a family.
211 connects callers to local help — food, housing, child care, and more.

Behind that number, trained community resource specialists make roughly 45,000 referrals a day, connecting callers to food programs, rental and utility help, child care, and employment services. In 2024 alone the network handled 16.8 million requests and generated more than 18 million referrals.

How to support a local United Way

Because the giving is organized locally, the most direct way to help is through your own community's United Way or at unitedway.org — and if you simply need help yourself, dialing 211 costs nothing.

United Way grew out of one practical insight: ordinary people, pooling small amounts, can hold up a whole community. Pennygood works from the same instinct, just at the scale of a single person — it lets a community send small monthly support to an individual who quietly does good. If someone like that comes to mind, they can start a page at pennygood.me.
